Sigur Center Asia Report, Issue 23: The U.S. Rebalance and ASEAN Regionalism Open Access

Since the Obama administration outlined its ‘pivot’ to Asia strategy in October 2011, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has closely monitored the United States’ rebalance and examined its own role as a driver of regionalism. ASEAN finds itself at odds with remaining central to the region’s security architecture while drawing on the United States’ superpower status to balance against a rising China. Julio Amador III, Asian Studies Visiting Fellow at the East-West Center in Washington, discussed the nuances surrounding the U.S. rebalance and its implications for ASEAN at a lecture on October 23 entitled, “The U.S. Rebalance and ASEAN Regionalism,” sponsored by the Sigur Center for Asian Studies.
