Cataloging Offerings: A look at how people interact with the Slave Memorial at George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon attempts to educate the public on the life and legacy of GeorgeWashington. However, the enslaved community who lived and worked on his estate are often pushed to the sidelines in this narrative. While most of estate is dedicated to teaching about the legacy and life of George Washington, the enslaved cemetery on the plantation is one of the main areas in which the lives of the enslaved people of Mount Vernon are discussed. This thesis explores the ways in which the public interacts with the space. In particular, it focuses on the offerings that have become commonplace within the cemetery. By studying these objects, this paper aims to learn more about visitors to the cemetery and how they react and interact with the space more broadly.
