The Entrepreneurial Esquire: Entrepreneurial Climate as a Mediator Between Transformational Leadership and Performance in Law Firms

The profession of law, a perennial linchpin of global commerce, currently faces a profound crisis in terms of both its economic model and its professional identity. This study proposes that contrary to their staid, conservative traditions, law firms that possess a firm-wide entrepreneurial climate will be more likely to thrive amid this crisis. Specifically, this study examines the hypothesis that entrepreneurial climate (conceived here as an amalgam of entrepreneurial orientation, corporate entrepreneurship, and open-systems organizational climate) mediates the relationship between transformational leadership and performance in law firms. The analysis of data collected from the reclusive legal industry provides support for this central hypothesis, and several academic and practical implications are discussed.
