Deezer Lounge: Rebuilding the Music Community in the Digital Era
Open AccessWhile music can mean something different to every person, the collective experience of music is fundamental to our social nature. Music acts as an instigator for the sharing of stories, ideas and emotions. In today's society, digital formats make it easier than ever to buy music, but the experience of intermingling with the music community is lost in the process. If physical retail music spaces are going to survive, they must adapt the model from a focus on the merchandise to a focus on the interactive component of the store. This thesis forms a different model for music retail in order to assure the continued existence of music communities. The model put forth in the paper implements a new program that gives interpersonal connections a chance to flourish. The design of the space takes its cue from the idea that sharing your music collection reveals who you are and serves to form a personal connection. The concept of reveal will be utilized, literally in the architecture, as well as spatially and emotionally, throughout the space. A new model for music retail serves as a catalyst for a revived music industry, a key element of the cultural arts.
