Is There Sexual Dimorphism in Canine Crown Shape Among Extant Hylobatids?

Sexual dimorphism refers to the differences in morphology between males and females of the same species. Specifically, canine crown size has been frequently used as an indicator of sex among primates. However, canine crown shape is less commonly discussed or quantified in this context (Kelley 1995, Plavcan 2001, and Plavcan et al. 2008). Those who have analyzed canine crown shape in primates have examined the overall shape of the tooth crown, but have not always focused canines that aid in determining sex. In particular canine crown shape has not been extensively quantified in hylobatids. This is probably because crown size is sexually monomorphic, but there are indications that male and female hylobatids may show subtle differences in morphology. The purpose of this study is twofold: 1) to apply a hitherto unused method (3D geometric morphometrics) to quantify size and shape variance of canine crowns in extant hominoids, and 2) to test the hypothesis that there is sexual dimorphism in canine shape among hylobatids.
