Resource Utilization, Performance and Security in Cloud Systems
Open AccessThe cloud era is turning convention on its head as moving computing to the cloud has become ubiquitous. Organizations are compelled to move to the cloud to be flexible in scaling the compute power up or down based on demand. Currently moving all data and processing to the cloud poses two major problems. One, from an economical standpoint, cloud service providers find it difficult to fully utilize all of their resources such as compute power, storage/network bandwidth, memory space and much more to bring the cost of moving to the cloud down. Two, from a trust standpoint, organizations are very skeptical about having their private data on the cloud fearing theft and malware attacks.Making the leap from standalone computing to the cloud must be reliable, affordable and secure. To achieve that cloud service providers should be able to utilize all of their resources efficiently driving the cost down, and make their services and the infrastructure secure and provide strong security guarantees so that users can be comfortable making that leap.My research focus is on making that leap possible by providing a hypervisor-based solution for efficient resource management, minimizing interference and providing strong security guarantees for virtual machines running on the cloud. I have designed systems that: 1. improve the performance in data centers by utilizing all of the resources available efficiently, and 2. provide strong and scalable security to the Virtual Machines that run on the cloud.
