Entanglement in America Is in the Heart and A Tale for the Time Being

The purpose of this thesis is to explore what we can learn about human life through the relationship of human and nature in Carlos Bulosan’s America Is in the Heart and Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being. This paper’s analysis is grounded in the theoretical framework of entanglement theory developed by ecocritics, at the heart of which is the awareness of the interconnectedness between human and nature. This analysis demonstrates that both Bulosan and Ozeki show an awareness of the agency of nature and dynamic movements between humans and non-human nature; most importantly, both authors use nature and its relationship to humans to expose injustice. The authors’ profound understanding of entanglement between nature and humans fosters an ethical stance that insists that the activities and knowledge practices of humans are always part of, and accountable to, the wider world.
