The Relationship Between Psychological Capital and Learning Organization Dimensions in a Community Medical Center: An exploratory survey research study. Open Access

This exploratory survey research study examined hypothesized relationships between psychological capital and the constructs of psychological capital - hope, self-efficacy, optimism, and resilience - to the seven dimensions of a learning organization. The research questions examined in this study were: To what extent is there a relationship between psychological capital and Watkins and Marsick's seven dimensions of a learning organization (continuous learning, inquiry and dialogue, collaboration and team learning, system sharing, empowerment, environment, and strategic leadership)? To what extent is there a relationship between each of the four subscales of psychological capital (self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience) and Watkins and Marsick's seven dimensions of a learning organization (continuous learning, inquiry and dialogue, collaboration and team learning, system sharing, empowerment, environment, and strategic leadership)?The site for the study was a 350-bed community medical center. All employees in departments with direct patient care responsibilities were invited to complete the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ) and the Dimensions of a Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ). Of the total 843 eligible participants, 500 employees completed surveys representing 59% of the population. This study provided empirical evidence of positive relationships between psychological capital and the dimensions of a learning organization. Psychological capital, hope, self-efficacy, and optimism had significant relationships with all seven dimensions of the learning organization - continuous learning, inquiry and dialogue, collaboration and team learning, system sharing, empowerment, environment, and strategic leadership. Resilience had a positive relationship at the individual level of a learning organization - continuous learning and inquiry and dialogue. There was no statistically significant relationship between resilience and the team and organizational level dimensions of a learning organization. This research is significant for practitioners because it provides empirical evidence regarding which learning organization dimensions had positive and statistically significant relationships with psychological capital.
