Play Therapist Pregnancy and Emergent Dynamics when Working with Children who have a History of Attachment Trauma: A Grounded Theory Investigation

Open Access

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the intersection of three specificconstructs: play therapist pregnancy, the therapeutic relationship, and client history of attachment trauma in order to inform treatment approaches from an attachment framework that considers the child’s trauma history and environment. The study addressed two research questions: What processes influence the therapeutic relationship between play therapists who are pregnant with child clients with a history of attachment trauma? and How do play therapists attend to the therapeutic relationship with a child with attachment trauma while pregnant? The study included 18 play therapists that are pregnant or have been pregnant in the last 5 years, all of whom work with clients who have a history of attachment trauma. Participant data were collected over two rounds of semi-structured interviews, member checks, and peer debriefing. The researchers will use a grounded theory approach as outlined by Corbin and Strauss (20015 for data analysis. Finding are presented using a Straussian framework, consisting of causal conditions, contextual factors, intervening conditions, actions, phenomenon, consequences, and core category. This study resulted in a data-driven model explaining how these 18 participants perceived and engaged in the therapeutic relationship during their pregnancy while working with children who had a history of attachment trauma.. Based on the data and findings, implications for counseling practice, training, supervision, and development; and future research are discussed.
