Grid Integration of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems and Renewable Distributed Generations : Reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion

Open Access

In a recent report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, it was urged that US Government should intensify for the innovation technology in electrical power system which is nuclear power, carbon capture, energy storage, and renewable energy such as wind and solar. Because significantly greater market penetration of these technologies will be required to help address the impact of climate change, and human health as well. However, the Operation of Hybrid Renewable Energy Generation Systems has an impact on the grid power quality and reliability of a weak power system grid. Tying the grid to the Distributed Generation (DG) of renewable energy sources should improve power delivery efficiency, integrate renewables, improve reliability and enhance cyber security for both producers and users. This dissertation investigates the use of the grid interconnected to various energy storage systems of the DG such as Solar PV and Wind Turbines into Power Systems. In Particular, the following three cases have been investigated.1] The Modeling and Controller of Variable Speed Wind Turbines (VSWT) as Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG), Permanent‐Magnetic Synchronous Generators (PMSG) connected to Various Energy Storage Systems (ESS) was designed to evaluate Power Quality in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD: %) and Economic Evaluation in terms of Payback time.2] Design of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems in 3 Phases Shunt Active Filter (SAF) enhancing power quality and stability issues connected to the grid of the Hybrid Renewable Energy Generation Systems as Variable Speed Wind Turbines and a Solar PV under 3 different Cases.3] Find Best Options of Various Energy Storage Systems based on Best Candidate Bus to be installed DG in IEEE 14 Bus Standard in terms of Voltage Sensitivity Analysis.Case studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed operation. Insights into how energy storage and renewable energy affect Power system reliability and economy are obtained. Simulation studies have been carried out on a Power System Computer Aided Design /Electromagnetic Transients Direct Current (PSCAD/EMTDC) with Matlab/Simulink.
