Here In My Own Mind: Examining the Penetration of Stereotypes in Black Feminist Ideation, Black Mothering Praxis, and American Welfare Policy

This research takes a look at the ways that stereotypes about black women in the United States of America permeate the minds of not only American people, but Black women as well. Thinking deeply about those stereotypes and what they mean for the ways that Black women live their lives means thinking about discursive moments that are happening in the discipline of black feminism and beyond surrounding black womanhood and more specifically, black mothering. With these factors in mind, the research project focuses specifically on Black mothering praxis and urges the reader to think differently about tropes that are ascribed to black women and how they affect black mothering in black feminist discourse as well as in American welfare policy.
