Scenic Design for Translations

As one of the most famous scripts written by Brian Friel, the production of Translations has been modified for a lot of shows since 1980. For the scenic design of Translations, the challenge this time was to restore the whole realistic 19th century Irish barn room and some natural landscape. According to my research, the barn room in Northern Ireland always presents with a rough stone as the main texture. Dreaming about a big set within a short time was another challenge for the scenic designer. Translations was directed by Jodi Kanter, in the spring of 2018 at the George Washington University’s Dorothy Marvin Center Betts Theater in Washington D.C. The fellow designers were Carl Gudenius as Lighting Designer; Kelvin Small, who worked on this show as his costume thesis; Tara Lyman Dobson as Prop Master; and Aria Nawab as Sound Designer.
