Finding the Object

Open Access

Finding the Object is an extended artist statement meant to provide context for a body of work produced in the Master of Fine Arts program at George Washington University. This statement outlines my investigation of materiality and geometry as they relate to touch. The roles of materiality and geometry are not fixed in relationship to one another; my understanding and use of touch grows as a result of the developments in their relationship. In this work, touch establishes a connection to the viewer that is grounded in the physical qualities of the object. The work in question consists of plywood drawings, monochrome paintings and a series of installations. This statement was written in conjunction with my thesis exhibition entitled Computers Can't Play Jazz. Images of that exhibition are available in the addendum of this statement.
