Does Racioethnic Discrimination at work Impact Black and Latino Workers in the Same Way? An Exploration of Gender and Race in the Workplace
Open Access DepositedThe purpose of this dissertation was to examine the similarities and differences between Black and Latinx workers when faced with racioethnic discrimination at work. The purpose of this dissertation was to find out how these groups coped with discrimination, if they left, stayed loyal, neglected their work, or voiced their mistreatment after it occurred. I also wanted to know if they suppressed their racial identity to fit in with the white majority workforce. To examine this, 302 participants were recruited from Prolific panels to take a survey. Results showed that Black and Latinx worker’s responses to racioethnic discrimination were the same: they leave, they neglect their jobs, and they voice their mistreatment. Black people reported higher rates of discrimination than Latinx. Finally, both Black and Latinx workers who suppressed their identities at work had lower job satisfaction. Thus, organizations need to examine their employee subgroups and how discrimination impacts their experiences at work.
