A Secure Wi-Fi Mesh Network for Smart Homes

Open Access Deposited

For a growing number of Internet users across the globe, remote working, online shopping, and virtual learning are becoming the new standard. Wi-Fi performance has never been more crucial as they use their home Internet to access work environments and children participate in e-learning. As the workload on our networks grows, so does the need to keep our data and information secure. A typical home network consists of a router connected to a modem, with the equipment connecting the smart devices to the Internet connection inside the home. The router transmits the wireless signal as far as possible within the home. Walls, furniture, building materials, and other impediments can impact the propagation of wireless signals across the home. Moreover, the signal weakens as you move away from the router. This is where mesh networks come into play. A mesh network uses multiple nodes or routers that can communicate with one another and disperse the Wi-Fi signal to cover a larger area. This praxis conducts a comparison of the privacy and security aspects of the existing Internet Service Providers’ (ISP) Wi-Fi mesh with different implementations of secure Wi-Fi mesh. The comparison of different Wi-Fi mesh solutions discussed in this research will enable the ISPs and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) vendors to embed security and privacy in the existing product design or new products in the future. The main contribution of this research is a comparative analysis of the data collected during security and privacy testing of ISP Wi-Fi mesh systems with secure Wi-Fi mesh implementations.
