Hack Your Layover

Open Access

Nearly every frequent flyer has been stuck in an airport due to weather, mechanical issues or other delays. Sometimes “stuck” can mean hours. How one reacts to that trouble says a lot about their ability to handle the unexpected. As more people are planning trips around the globe, airlines have to fly bigger planes and reduce the number of flights in order to keep up with the demands, which lead to significant periods of layovers. Hours of dullness, cramped seating, stale food, and ambient noise that amplifies the stress and can impact even the First and Business class lounges. A creative space can soothe the soul and maybe even lead to a pleasant experience. That’s why some of the airports have tried to build such an environment for their passengers. This project observes and defines the most common substantial problems travelers face during a layover in the airports, as a result of these long stops. It proposes solutions through designing public and private spaces that offer special activities to prevent dullness or fight the far less tangible problem: noise, by providing peace and quiet. The analysis of data gathered through research, lead to dividing the end user to two major groups: Passengers that travel with small children and singles and matures without any kids. Design resolution includes providing quiet lounges and workstations, Sleeping pods, activity areas for both adults and kids, and refreshment areas with showers. The research along with the proposed design is expected to show a decrease in stress, and therefore invent a less frustrating experience for those who have to deal with extended layovers.
