BIOMIMICRY: LOOKING TO NATURE FOR DESIGN SOLUTIONS

This project explores and applies principles of Biomimicry in the design and development of a cultural arts center along the Potomac River. The center features both a nineteenth-century historic canal tavern and a modern pavilion addition that overlooks the river and is integrated into the natural landscape. The biomimetic concept that undergirds the design is the metamorphosis of catepillar to butterfly. Like the center, the insect is an organism with two entirely unique manifestations. The original building ressembles the catepillar in that both are ground-oriented. The modern addition ressembles the butterfly in that both are air-oriented. The research portion of the thesis covers biomimetic innovations in industrial design, architecture, energy efficiency and transportion.
