Labeling Theory and the Kennedys
Open AccessIn this thesis, I begin by introducing the basic premise of labeling theory. I then discuss the Saints and the Roughnecks in reference to labeling theory. Next, I consider how the Kennedy men exhibits elements of the labeling theory. Then, I explain how other known figures such as Al Capone, Bill Clinton and Bill Janklow exhibit the elements of labeling theory compared to the Kennedy men. Finally, I consider why these two groups of men experience differential treatment and labels from society when they committed the same acts: the public sees the Kennedys as a successful, attractive family of high status and achievement who "suffered misfortune" in the form of the "Kennedy Curse" while Capone, Clinton and Janklow were simply labeled as criminals and deviants.
