Balancing Privacy with Security: The Impact of Employees' Risk Perceptions on their Privacy Decisions
Open AccessABSTRACT Balancing Privacy with Security: The Impact of Employees' Risk Perceptions on their Privacy DecisionsThe goal of this research was to identify the potential impact perception of risk and employment status may have on an employee's action to invade another's privacy. Risk was comprised of status of perpetrator, likelihood of an event occurring and the severity of the consequences should it occur. The researcher focused on employees' actions towards perceived risk involving the escalation of third-party anti-social or erratic behavior. By analyzing employees' reactions to these stressors, the researcher sought to provide insight into this subjective approach to risk and document willingness to take privacy impacting action. Answers were affirmative in suggesting that the status of the perpetrator, likelihood of an event occurring, and the consequences do indeed impact a person's decision to take a particular action. Further, the inclusion of status as a variable to consider in analysis further enhanced the relationship of likelihood and consequence and led to a more refined a comprehensive product with which to evaluate risk. The rationale for such a study was to contribute to employers' understanding of their employees' approach to and participation in these issues and, in this respect, it was successful. Such an understanding is vital to sufficiently address objectives of organizational, systems, and personnel security.
