Advancing Methods for the Use of Surveillance Data in Sports Injury Research

Much of the sports injury literature contains little mention or application of the principles of public health and injury prevention. This is especially true with respect to describing data sources and assessing how the purpose and design of a surveillance system influence the results of the study and affect the generalizability of findings. Likewise, because the audience may not be familiar with the characteristics of a particular data source, it can be difficult for readers to objectively evaluate study findings. A description of surveillance systems commonly accessed for sports injury research may be a useful resource for researchers and the lay audience alike. Using several different types of surveillance systems, the goals of this study are as follows:1. To assess the utility of various injury surveillance systems for sports injury epidemiology research.2. To compare injury rates across three different team ball sports using hours of participation as the denominator, and to compare these rates to those derived using the U.S. population.3. Using insurance claims data, to identify the injury scenarios of lacrosse injuries.The first paper will be a primer on surveillance systems that may provide useful information to the audience of sports injury literature. Next a practical application will be demonstrated by calculating injury rates for three team ball sports using differing sources of publicly-available data. Finally, this will be the first study to use insurance claims data to systematically assess lacrosse injury risks and mechanisms. The detailed claims data will be used to determine the most common injury scenarios. The study findings will be used to tailor evidence-based preventive measures to the men's and women's lacrosse games.
