Open Access Deposited

Civil and Military Division

This thesis centers on the early industrialization of Manchuria during the late 1910s and 1920s under the local warlord government. It examines the ideologies of Zhang Zuolin’s government and civil official Wang Yongjiang on utilizing natural resources and specific reforms on immigration, railway building, mining industries, and building infrastructure while competing with surrounding global powers. Using local government’s and officials’ letters and records, memoirs and yearbooks in Chinese, Japanese, and English, the thesis explores why Zhang Zuolin’s regime stands out as a uniquely successful case among Chinese warlords of the period.
