Army of Shadows - The Mausoleum at Langley

This thesis explores functionality and experiential space through the lens of ritual, thresholds, boundaries, passages, interstitial space and the in-between as a framework to create protected spaces for valuable items. In this instance, items of value are the vital remains of paramilitary officers of the Clandestine Service of the CIA. The life of such a CIA agent is typically shrouded in secrecy. In death, this thesis proposes to humanize these men and women who have valiantly served their country. While we are predisposed to reflect on our own temporal nature, how should the final resting place of the agent be represented? While shrouded in secrecy in life and even in death, these patriots deserve a dignified resting place that highlights the essence of their imprints on earth.
