Korean development paths : the possible becomes reality
Open Access DepositedThis thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first, comprising Chapters 2 and 3, deals with the cultural and ideological background of the three main leaders of Korean governments from 1946 to 1979--Kim Il Sung in the north, and Syngman Rhee and Park Chung Hee in the south. Given the highly personalized nature of Korean Confucian culture, it makes sense to get a flavor for the thinking of the man who leads because his word, as long as he controls the country, is law. After gaining a perspective on where Kim Il Sung and Syngman Rhee came from, Chapter 3 explains their efforts to establish order and control over the DPRK and ROK political elites in the face of threats from within and without their new nations. MANAGEMENT OF THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROCESS begins the second part of the thesis. On the DPRK side, it explains how Kim Il Sung successfully orchestrated the north Korean economy within a socialist framework in the late 1950s and early 1960s to the point where the south was clearly the second choice for Koreans repatriating from Japan. On the ROK side, Park Chung Hee's strategy for the economic priority is discussed, in the context of the economic planning process. This copy is a scan of the original printed and bound typescript.
