A Lover of the Beautiful: Harriet Joor and the Pursuit of the American Arts and Crafts Ideal

This thesis examines the career of Harriet Coulter Joor (1875-1965), an artist, designer, teacher, and writer working in the Arts and Crafts tradition in the United States. Joor trained as a pottery decorator and embroiderer at Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans and later worked as a freelance designer of embroidered textiles for Arts and Crafts impresario Gustav Stickley. She was also a prolific writer and teacher of handicrafts and spent several years living as a homesteader in rural South Dakota. This thesis presents a cohesive analysis of Joor's professional activities and personal convictions, charting her engagement with the American Arts and Crafts movement and her dedication to spreading its message and living its tenets.
