Effect of Newer Generation of HIV Medication Regimen on The Endothelial Function

Abstract of ThesisEffect of newer generation of HIV medication regimen on the endothelial function.Purpose: To determine the effect of newer generation antiretroviral therapy (Integrase inhibitorand NNRTI) on the endothelial dysfunction, on patients without diabetes. Methods: 30 subjects, aged between 40 and 65 years with body mass index between 25.0-39.9kg, were enrolled in the study. Male only and subjects are stratified into 2 groups based ontheir HIV medication regimen. 80 mls of blood drawn, where 55mls used for stem cellsprogenitor cell harvest. Mononuclear cell extract from whole blood, analyzed by flow cytometryand cultured for functional analysis (CFU). 15-20mls for biochemistry analysis followed bybiophysical parameters (i.e. weight, blood pressure, waist size, BMI) were assessed and lipidprofiles. Since it is a small sample study, the result was divided into cellular and non-cellularparameters. Cellular parameters, fraction of CD34+ mononuclear cells were compared to thetotal mononuclear popular.Results:  The number of patients taking NRTI + NNRTI (Arm 1) increase and NRTI + II (Arm2) was decreased with the following CD34+ in Arm1 was 3.89% (SD of 1.9%) and Arm 2 was1.06% (SD of 0.93%) Fig 1-3, CFU in Arm 1 forms10.25 colonies of cells at day 14(SD+10.2),Arm 2 forming 6.05 colonies (SD+ 6.8) colonies. Non-cellular: To mention but few, Fig 9 and10 lipid profiles such as LDL was 137 (SD+ 94.25) on Arm 1 compared to 94.25 (SD+ 38.86) onArm 2. HDL in both groups of drugs (Arm 1 and Arm 2) were equivalent. Average HDL on bothArms was 53 (SD+ 14.5). CRP (C- reactive protein) Arm1 mean was 1.88 (SD+ 1.89) while Arm2, mean of 1.3 (SD+ 0.9). IL6, mean in Arm 1 was 2.6(SD+ 1.7) and Arm 2 was 3.14 (SD+2.49).6Conclusion: Based on the limited data, subject population, and basic statistical analysis we canconclude that it is possible that an HIV medication regimen containing NNRTI might be betterfor endothelial health. Hence the relationships are not clear and require further investigation.
