Hunting Nature

Open Access

This thesis investigates Christian faith, value systems, and hunting culture in rural Maryland. I filmed and photographed the Groves family, including friends and extended family members. The project is comprised of a series of photographs, a documentary film, and a narrative essay on a website designed specifically for the project. While spending lengthy periods with the family and performing a series of interviews, I discovered the importance religion and hunting for Tracy, the patriarch, and his family. Through traditional value systems, their culture and lifestyle is preserved and passed down from generation to generation. This project attempts to document the lifestyle of a specific group of hunters, who place values on the land, conservation, Christianity, and family bonds.
