Comparing Furniture in the Room-by-Room Probate Inventories of Four Colonial Governors in Seventeenth Century Virginia and Massachusetts

The thesis compares the furniture listed in four seventeenth century room-by-room inventories of colonial governors, two from Virginia and two from Massachusetts, to determine the degree of differences or similarities of furniture forms, styles, and attitudes about furniture as an expression of wealth, position, and power. The inventories selected were from Elizabeth Digges, surviving spouse of Governor Edward Digges of Virginia; Governor Ralph Wormeley II of Virginia; Governor William Bradford of Massachusetts; and Governor Thomas Prence of Massachusetts. Because of differences in the social, cultural, economic conditions of the colonies and personal backgrounds of the colonial governors, the comparison of probate inventories suggested more differences than similarities in the types of furniture forms and styles owned by these individuals.
