Three Essays on Export Relationship Duration

This dissertation contributes to trade duration literature by exploring the determinants and learning-by-exporting spillover effects of export duration. The first two essays examine cross-country and cross-industry spillover effects of export duration. These are the first papers to examine relationships between export duration and new market entry empirically, highlighting a potentially crucial but previously overlooked determinant of geographic and product diversification of exports. The last essay re-examines factors that drive trade duration focusing on importing country industry characteristics. Whereas existing literature on export survival has focused predominantly on exporting country- and firm-specific attributes, this essay is the first study to also consider importing country's domestic industry characteristics in the analysis of trade relationship survival.
