The multimedia documentary project “Where I Belong” uses video, photographs, interviews, writings, and an interactive website, to tell stories of individuals living and working in Washington, D.C., and how the search for a higher meaning of life leads them to find communities of like-minded people and build sustaining social community and relationships. Secular rituals, practices, and traditions define identity and purpose. Through the stories of a tango dancer, a yoga instructor and a bartender, the project explores aspects of modern culture and challenges the idea that the United States does not have one. The project recognizes the diversity in U.S. culture and the value of these facets, which sometimes go unnoticed for not being religious or ancient. “Where I Belong” website engages the audience in an on-going dialogue investigating the concepts of contemporary rituals, social codes, collective and individual behavior, and a human desire to belong.
