Numerosity Effects: Numbers Never Lie, But They Don't Tell the Whole Story

Open Access

Through a series of three essays, causes, types, and effects of the numerosity heuristic are explored. These three essays manipulate equivalent information in different ways but advance the understanding of numerosity effects. First, Essay 1 provides evidence that motivation to process numeric information is a mechanism behind the unit effect. Second, Essay 2 shows that the symbolic (abstract) and spatial (concrete) dimensions of numerosity should be distinguished. Finally, in Essay 3, the moderating effects of health motivation are explored in the situation of numerosity effects on nutrition labeling.
