Refractive Index-Matched Fluoropolymer Development for Experimental Hydrodynamics
Open Access DepositedIn experimental fluid dynamics, a mismatch in refractive index (RI) between solids and fluids can lead to significant distortions, limiting the ability to perform optical diagnostics. To minimize these distortions, it is ideal to use a solid model that is index-matched to the working fluid. However, achieving an index matched liquid can be prohibitively expensive, often necessitating the construction of new facilities or the use of costly or toxic materials. An alternative approach involves using a solid model that is refractive index-matched to water, which would simplify the process and allow for deployment in many existing facilities. This work focuses on developing a fluoropolymer that is refractive index-matched to water for experimental use. It details the modification of existing materials and the development of novel solutions, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each approach. Several effective methods are presented for developing a UV-curable, low-RI liquid polymer capable of forming complex solid geometries.
