How Social Media Saved My Sex Life: Exploring the Potential of Social Media for Sex Education in Nigeria

This study explores how young adults in Nigeria seek sex education on social media, to what extent they trust that information, and how they think it might affect them as parents in the future. The data presented here shows that families and communities still see discussing sex for informational purposes as a taboo, but that many young adults believe this practice should be accepted for early child education and utilized to reduce unhealthy adult behaviors. When not given substantial information, young adults seek human and material resources to make sense of bodily changes and emotions, and proceed to self-learn about sex education on social media using human intuition, testimonials, information laden with research and looking out for credible sex educators. Giving children early access to accurate sex education will help prevent the spread of misinformation and aid them in making informed decisions. Creating a social media platform with credible sex educators for the purpose of teaching about sex is a way to increase distribution of accurate information.
