The Impact of Prekindergarten Attendance on School Readiness

Open Access

Early childhood education is the foundation upon which later academic skills are built. This research addresses prekindergarten programs in particular, using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study to examine the impact of prekindergarten attendance on children’s reading and math scores, as well as several behavioral traits, observed at the beginning of the kindergarten year. The findings indicate that prekindergarten has a positive impact on academic outcomes but that its impact on behavioral traits is slightly negative.
