Augmented-Reality based Education Platform with Reduced Stress through Gamification for Autistic Individuals

Digital technologies have come to pose interesting solutions in treating neurodevelopmental disorders. Video games, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) have been used to aid in therapy, education, social interaction, and physical activity in children and adolescents with autism. Children with autism often develop special interests in these technologies which is one of the reasons they are being studied for their therapeutic potential. Previous experiments have suggested that video games, VR, and AR are effective at increasing children’s social behaviors and improving educational outcomes. In this thesis for the Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering at the George Washington University, I review such experiments as well as creating a novel AR block building game aimed at improving the learning experience for children with autism. The created game was studied alongside the delivery of similar material in a more traditional format.
