Arduino for Wellness
Open AccessThis thesis consists of a set of two project ideas based on the idea of using an Arduino (a type of open-source microcontroller) and some simple code to encourage health and wellness while teaching computer science principles. The content would be suitable for an introductory level computer science class (high school or college), and it introduces ideas like declaring and using variables, if/else statements, timers, and generally showing how hardware and software can interact. The first project is explained using two videos, and the second project has a diagram and instructions that accompany it. In both cases, I have attempted to equally engage the software, hardware, and usage of the resulting devices. Looking ahead, I think that this idea of encouraging health and wellness throughout the curriculum could be a fruitful avenue to explore. Arduino for Wellness is the current iteration of over a year of research that took a few twists and turns as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. Through discussions with teachers, disability support specialists, students, and designers, I was able to identify a few key areas for intervention, which I describe in more depth in the first video. I hope that it can be of use or inspiration to computer science and other STEM instructors.
