Second the None: The Legend of Stanton Elementary Open Access
"Second to None: The Legend of Stanton Elementary" is a multimedia project and website by Mary Clare "Clary" Estes. The story is an examination of Stanton Elementary in Washington, D.C. Deemed a "turnaround" school in the capital's Anacostia neighborhood, Stanton was the second worst performing school in the District in 2009. As a result the majority of the staff was fired and replaced with new, enthusiastic educators who have worked to bring the students up to grade level and put the school and community on a solid footing. The school partnered with the DC Scholars Charter program and is a testing ground for its model in the District of Columbia. This project builds on a tradition of documentary projects about the U.S. education system, highlighting a struggling school in Washington, D.C., just a few years into the radical reform policies of former School Chancellor Michelle Rhee.
