A Decision Support Tool for Team Design in Changing Environments Utilizing Agent-Based Modeling

With work environments becoming increasingly complex and dynamic, the ability to rapidly adapt team designs to maintain performance has become critical. However, leaders often struggle to make informed decisions about optimizing team composition and structure in the face of crises or major team environmental shifts. There are decades of team design research available but access to this research and application is difficult without sifting through all the research on one’s own.This research presents a decision support tool (DST) that takes decades of research and applies it in a manner that empowers leaders to determine the best team design for a given situation. The DST allows users to input their current team parameters, including the number of individuals, decisions, interactions, and quality of team members' attributes. Leveraging an agent-based model (ABM) grounded in the research of the past decades, the tool then simulates how different team designs perform under different conditions. The results of this Praxis show that this proof of concept, quantitatively based DST, can inform team design decisions for making changes in the organizational design, number of individuals, decisions, and interactions of the team, as well as the quality of team members.
