A Mirepoix

Open Access

How can I leverage my creative practice to raise critical questions about contemporary social issues in the minds of my audience? This is not only the question I ask myself in producing a work of art, but it is the primal quest of my thesis. My body of work reflects my experiences and observations within popular culture. I incorporate topics from my personal life linked to current social and political issues, which are the core of my MFA Thesis. A Mirepoix, the French word mirepoix refers to a culinary term for finely chopped celery, onions, and carrots, sautéed with butter and herbs, which is used in numerous dishes. I repurpose this culinary technique by using ready-made objects, combined with common materials found in different places; ranging from hardware stores to post exchanges (PX). The materials are my mixture to create a mirepoix. The concept and overall meaning is the main protein for my viewer to consume. As the viewer participates in or views the work, they can digest the narrative of each work of art. I leverage my creative practice to raise critical questions about contemporary social issues in the minds of my audience.
