“Perspectives”, A Case Study Exhibition in Developing Relevancy Between The Cloisters and its Surrounding Community of Washington Heights, NYC

This paper explores the relationship between large fine art institutions and their surrounding community through a proposal of exhibition design interventions. This thesis is a case study exhibition entitled “Perspectives” located at The Cloisters museum in Fort Tryon Park, NYC. Through an investigation of the causes of the divide between and the museum and the community of Washington Heights, this paper presents design strategies for overcoming the psychological gap between the two neighboring groups. Ultimately, through an application of the two-fold meaning of the term perspective, this paper shows how, through design interventions, The Cloisters museum can extend beyond the strict boundaries of its building and invite its Washington Heights neighbors to enjoy the immersive qualities of the space.
