Arts-based Development Work: The Integration of Art Education Practices in Development Work Projects

This research was intended to explore the relationship between art education and internationaldevelopment work. The purpose was to discover the capacity in which practices from arteducation and development work can be integrated into a successful development work project.A qualitative narrative study was designed to evaluate the success and sustainability of twocases, India Foundation for the Arts' Kali-Kalisu and Barefoot Artists' Dandelion SchoolTransformation Project. Project reports, correspondence, publications, organizational documents,assessments, and other narrative data were evaluated through a modified CIPP model. A furtherthematic analysis of unique characteristics, methodologies, and practices that were identifiedwithin both projects highlighted qualities for an integrated practice model. These findings lead tothe formulation of a unique definition for the term arts-based development work. This definitionseparates it from projects whose practices rely on art as a supplement to development workpractices, or those that place development work practices secondary to art.
