Music Becoming-Minor in Performance Spaces
Open Access DepositedThis dissertation draws on Deleuze and Guattari's philosophical concepts to explore music becoming-minor in performance spaces. Through three key performance events—two in New York City music venues and one at a major academic conference on affect theory—the research maps how various bodies (human and non-human ones, including those of musicians, researchers, texts, materials, and technologies) form novel assemblages that deterritorialize traditional musical and academic structures. The work culminates in an encore; my own solo experimental work that marks a becoming--a line of flight from classical into New Music territories. The overall project traces these transformations through pianist Ning Yu's performances of contemporary compositions and then extends to my performances in academia. The dissertation partially takes an unconventional form, transforming a dissertation arrangement into a performance space, while incorporating a digital platform that somewhat captures and extends the performances. The research synthesizes these performance events through concept-as-method: becoming, the refrain, event, and minor—presenting how New Music generates novel sonic possibilities, while also demonstrating how academic research itself might undergo processes of becoming-minor.
