Collective Mindfulness in the Workplace: A Narrative Research Study Exploring Individual Mindfulness Practices and the Influence on Collective Mindfulness Practices of Workgroups

Open Access

The purpose of this narrative research study was to explore the stories and experiences of individual mindfulness practitioners who apply their mindful practices within a workplace context. The lived experience of the mindfulness practitioner was used as a lens to gain perspective into how a mindfulness practitioner enacts mindfulness behaviors within a workgroup and how they perceive that process influences the practices and behaviors of others in the collective. The research study built on the foundations of mindfulness research and sought to bridge gaps between the Eastern definitions of individual mindfulness based on “being” and the Western definitions of collective and team mindfulness based on “doing.” Based on the findings of this study, mindfulness practitioners in the workplace experience an enhanced sense of awareness that enables reflection and cognitive reframing. Mindfulness practitioners perceive that they influence members of the collective relationally through interpersonal mindfulness practices, shared energy, and information flows. Additional findings included common characteristics of mindful collectives and perceived barriers to mindfulness. The implications of the findings are described as well as recommendations for practice.
