Black Sonic Alchemy
Open Access DepositedThis essay explores how sound making informs a social practice-based, nonlinear methodology of reflection, reclamation, improvisation, and preservation, Black Sonic Alchemy, to transform sonic violence into fuel for creative reimagined expression. Informed by personal experience, performance, and academic research, the narrative plays the backdrop of queering violent space through sonic transmutation, a practice influenced by Black music making, passed on through my lived experience in Black Southern Missionary Baptist Church culture, in Tennessee. I attempt to demonstrate how sonic alchemy - transmuting negative vibrations and frequencies into soundwaves of pleasure and joy – is a useful social practice framing capable of reimagining life while simultaneously harnessing the potential for societal change.
