Inside Sanctuary

This thesis explores the struggles of running and maintaining an animal shelter in an urban community. Established in 1869, Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is one of the earliest animal shelters that was established in United States. Within the past century Maryland SPCA has worked out a strategy that works for their own community resulting in a high adoption rate of animals. It serves as an integral animal shelter and animal welfare organization that serves the communities in Baltimore. The content of this thesis touches topics such as animal population, adoption rates, community engagement, human to animal relationship, youth and violence and euthanasia among other things. This project incorporates photographs, interviews, a multimedia project website, video, and community engagement documentation all with the objective of increasing understanding of U.S. animal welfare culture.
