System Dynamics Based Analysis of Global Semiconductor Supply Chain Disruptions

The COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 exposed the fragility of global supply chains to major world disasters, in particular the dependence on imports from China and Asia of advanced semiconductor chips for automotive and aerospace industries. Once the Pandemic showed signs of recovery, global supply chains were not prepared for the swift return in demand creating a lag in deliveries and leaving inventory levels of semiconductor chips very low which impacted automotive and DoD sector companies significantly (Casper, 2021). The impact on various business sectors was immediately evident, highlighting the need for better systemic modeling against large scale world events such as the Pandemic or natural disasters. In this research, a systems dynamics approach will be used to investigate scenarios that will potentially improve resilience against such worldwide events.
