Ready, Steady, Putt! An Exhibition About the History of Miniature Golf in America

Open Access

Ready, Steady, Putt! This paper outlines the purpose, strategy, and methodology supporting a proposed exhibition, Ready, Steady, Putt! — a playable history exhibition exploring the history of miniature golf design, its place within recreational history, and its lasting cultural significance in America. This exhibition pairs interactive participation through the act of playing miniature golf and traditional collections-based display to explore what miniature golf teaches us about social, recreational history. It is an examination of a cultural phenomenon that began as a Roaring '20s fad and survives today as a mainstay of resort towns and roadside America. The exhibition will be situated at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, the largest museum devoted to all things related to play. Exhibitions at the Strong National Museum of Play, previous miniature golf course exhibitions held in museums, and other interactive-based exhibitions were studied to establish interpretive strategies and gauge the viability of this proposed exhibition.
