A Conversation on Beauty

Open Access

This thesis examines female body image and the development of the relationships women have with their bodies over time. Through interviews with Wanda Saucier, Danyelle Crain and Gail Scott, this multimedia piece explores the major components that shaped their ideas about beauty: aging, weight gain and loss, surgery, societal pressures to meet certain beauty standards, acceptance from others, and expectations created through the media and popular culture. Through the cross-platform of photography, video and writing this project documents the emotional and mental struggles women nuance on a daily basis. Further exploration of these topics led to working with teenage girls at Bogalusa High School in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The engagement with this community of students draws parallels with older women and the ever evolving balance of self acceptance and struggle with physical appearance.
