Discipline of Beauty: The Modern Expression of Japanese Craft

This thesis work defines the programming, storyline, resources, and design parameters for Discipline of Beauty: The Modern Expression of Japanese Craft, a proposed theoretical exhibition of Japanese craft and art works at the Smithsonian's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Asian Art in Washington, DC. This exhibition aims to fill in the void, often found in institutional collections of Japanese art, between traditional craft and the expressive arts of the twentieth century. It demonstrates that the two represent evolutionary developments along an art-historical continuum, rather than distinct moments in a rigid Japanese Art History.
