Elastic π±p Scattering Cross Section Ratio for 165, 169 and 175 MeV/c Beam Momenta in MUSE

This thesis focuses on an experimental study of the elastic π+p to π−p cross section ratio for three fixed beam momenta with central values of 165.32, 169.32 and 171.85 MeV/c in order search for a predicted narrow N′ resonance contribution in the elastic π−p scattering cross section. The obtained elastic pion scattering cross section ratios are presented and discussed in this work.These measurements were carried out as a part of the MUon proton Scattering Experiment (MUSE) dress rehearsal data taking. MUSE will employ a large-acceptance, non-magnetic detector system. The experiment is designed to address the Proton Radius Puzzle (PRP): the discrepancy between the radius of the proton as measured with electrons, and that measured using muons, first observed in 2010.MUSE will provide a simultaneous measurement of elastic e±p and μ±p scattering in a kinematic range sensitive to the proton radius extraction. As MUSE uses a secondary, mixed eμπ beam in the πM1 beam line of the Paul Scherer Institute, Switzerland, it is possible to switch charge states.In addition, as a large component of the dissertation project described herein, the Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) was designed and developed. The TDAQ was tested during the August 2019 dress rehearsal beam time while collecting pion scattering data. This system is going to be used during MUSE production data taking with the data analysis algorithms and techniques that were developed while performing the data analysis presented in this work.
