Cyclicality and Slowdown of Productivity with a New Dataset of Utilization Adjusted TFP

This dissertation provides a new dataset of utility adjusted TFP growth for a panel of advanced economies and examines its features. In Chapter 2, following the approach proposed by Basu, Fernald and Kimball (2006), the TFP growth measures are constructed by using industry level data and controlling for unobserved cyclical utilization. Chapter 3 assesses the effects of technological shocks on production and components of production using refined measure of total factor productivity (TFP) growth for a panel of advanced economies. The results of the paper show that adjusted TFP leads to either a decrease in hours and non-residential investment or a subsided increase in these inputs compared to the responses to the traditional Solow residual for a panel of 18 advanced countries for which the adjusted TFP are constructed. Chapter 4 analyzes aggregate and sectoral patterns of total factor productivity (TFP) growth for a panel of 18 major advanced economies during the last two decades.
